Working closely with the client, architect, structural engineer and conservation specialists, Berkeley Place carefully restored the building’s historic fabric, including the remarkable Solar Wing, original stonework and numerous period features. Every intervention was meticulously planned to protect the integrity of the medieval structure while meeting the exacting requirements of the conservation authorities.

A defining element of the project was the addition of a striking contemporary two-storey extension constructed from solid green oak and structural glazing. Integrating this modern structure with a building that had evolved over five centuries required exceptional craftsmanship, precise engineering and close collaboration to achieve a seamless connection between old and new.

Sophisticated building services and discreet mechanical and electrical systems were carefully integrated to enhance comfort, energy performance and long-term sustainability without compromising the building’s historic character.

Through rigorous management of time, quality and expenditure, Birdcombe Court has been successfully preserved for future generations, combining sensitive conservation with outstanding contemporary craftsmanship.
